Chelsea legend John Obi Mikel gave a brutal verdict on Nicolas Jackson‘s performance against Manchester City

The Enzo Maresca era at Stamford Bridge got off to a losing start as goals from Erling Haaland and Mateo Kovacic secured a 2-0 win for the visitors.

City were perhaps a little fortunate at times to keep a clean sheet as Chelsea fired off 10 shots, with three on target.

Sadly for the Blues they were unable to convert any of their chances into goals, with Jackson proving especially frustrating with his costly misses.

The Senegalese international was subsequently withdrawn from the match in the 67th minute for 18-year-old Marc Guiu.

Working as an analyst for beIN Sports, Mikel did not hold back in his review of Jackson’s performance and suggested the club may need to dip into the transfer market once more.

‘You need to have a striker who knows how to hit a ball in the back of the net and that’s what we don’t have,’ Mikel told beIN Sports.

‘I know I talk so much about him and sometimes I sound like I disrespect him, but I don’t disrespect him.’

Jackson moved to Stamford Bridge from Villarreal last summer in a £32million deal and scored 14 goals in his debut Premier League campaign.

However, his goal haul could have been significantly higher having missed 24 big chances last season, the third-most in the league.

The striker also became a point of ridicule in his early days at Chelsea when he accumulated more yellow cards than goals.

In fact, it took Jackson until December for him to have scored more league goals than yellow cards accumulated when he found the back of the net against Sheffield United.

However, Jackson enjoyed an impressive run-in to end the season as he scored seven goals in Chelsea’s final 13 games.
