Former Leicester City captain Kasper Schmeichel has completed a one-year-deal with Belgian Pro League side Anderlecht. 

The 36-year-old was released on a free transfer by Ligue 1 side OGC Nice on transfer deadline day. 

He was initially linked with a move to reunite with former Leicester manager Brendan Rogers at Celtic, who were in the market for a replacement for the struggling Joe Hart. 

However, since the start of the new season Hart has seen a resurgence in form, most recently putting in a stellar performance in the Old Firm derby against Rangers

Free agent Schmeichel has now joined Anderlecht on a one-year-deal but with the option to extent for another year.

Schmeichel made 479 appearances for the Foxes, gaining promotion and winning the Premier League, FA Cup and Community Shield. 

However he had a mixed year at Nice, making 46 appearances in all competitions after joining the Ligue 1 side on a free transfer from Leicester.

On his move to Anderlecht, the Denmark international said: ‘Anderlecht is just a massive club,

‘Former team-mates from different places have always talked so highly and warmly of this place. It was something I really wanted to become part of.’

Schmeichel had interest from Chelsea, Nottingham Forest and Brentford during the last weeks of the transfer window but reportedly wanted to be number one or challenging at a big club.
