Former Manchester United midfielder Angel Gomes was taken to hospital on Saturday night with a serious head injury.
The 23-year-old – who was on United’s books between the ages of six and 19 – started for Lille in their Ligue 1 season opener at Reims.
Gomes was on the receiving end of a dangerous aerial challenge by Amadou Kone inside the opening 15 minutes of the game, which left him prone on the ground.
Referee Eric Wattellier instantly called for medical assistance and Gomes was then treated on the field for 17 minutes before eventually being transported to hospital.
Lille’s players formed a circle around Gomes while he was receiving on-field treatment.

Gomes was applauded by both sets of fans – while the whole crowd supportively chanted his name – as he left the pitch.
Kone, after being shown a straight red card for his dangerous foul, was pictured praying for Gomes from inside the Reims changing room.
The game restarted following a delay in excess of half an hour.
Bafode Diakite scored the opening goal in the 30th minute of first-half added time before holding up the No 8 shirt belonging to Gomes in front of a pitchside TV camera.
Lille then issued a statement during the half-time break to confirm that Gomes had was conscious again.
It read: ‘Angel Gomes has regained consciousness and has been transferred to hospital. All our thoughts are with him’.

Gomes joined Lille on a free transfer in August 2020.
The London-born midfielder – who featured in 10 first-team games for United – has since made more than 100 appearances for the French club.
