Former Manchester United caretaker Michael Carrick would be ‘tempted’ by a potential return to the Old Trafford dugout to replace Ruben Amorim.

The Red Devils’ current head coach is under intense pressure following a listless 3-1 loss to Brentford at the weekend. Man Utd have only won two games so far this term and languish in 14th in the Premier League.

Man Utd are a mid-table side, despite spending like a Champions League outfit. Amorim is facing an uphill battle to save his job, but a sacking looks increasingly inevitable.

Saturday’s clash with Sunderland could seal his fate, although INEOS are understood to be reluctant to part with Amorim less than a year into his tenure after going all-in on him and due to the hefty compensation he would be owed.

Whatever the case, succession planning is fully underway. Man Utd are not yet holding talks with potential replacements, but they are drawing up a list of options.

Carrick tempted by Man Utd return

Despite Man Utd having become a veritable graveyard for managers in recent years, the idea of being the one to get them back on their perch still holds massive appeal.

Journalist Ben Jacobs revealed on Monday that Oliver Glasner would leave his hugely successful Crystal Palace arrangement ‘in a heartbeat’ to take the job at Old Trafford.

Similarly, The Athletic’s Adam Crafton believes that Bournemouth tactician Andoni Iraola would be keen on the challenge, while Fabrizio Romano has stated that ex-Barcelona boss Xavi wants to take the reins at Man Utd.

Now, talkSPORT reports that former Red Devils player and caretaker manager Michael Carrick would also be ‘tempted’ by the opportunity to replace Amorim.

Carrick previously oversaw three games following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in late 2021 before Ralf Rangnick came on board as interim head coach.

The 44-year-old has been out of a job since getting sacked by Middlesbrough in June. He was handed a new three-year deal by Boro in 2024 after two promising seasons, but lost his job after a 10th-place Championship finish almost exactly a year later.
