Four games Bayern Munich could still lose in this season’s Bundesliga title race

After Bayern Munich’s 5-1 drubbing of RB Leipzig away from home on January 17th, Bundesliga fans were already considering the Meisterschale’s return to the Allianz Arena as a near-certainty. The Bavarians hadn’t lost a single game all season, winning all but two to create a huge deficit back to Borussia Dortmund at the top of the table. Then came an uncharacteristic wobble. 

Bayern’s Blip Gives Dortmund Hope

Just one week on from arguably their finest domestic appearance of the season, Bayern slumped to a stunning 2-1 home defeat against relegation-threatened Augsburg. They would follow that up with a 2-2 draw away at newly promoted Hamburg, rallying to overturn a 1-0 deficit only to be reeled back in themselves via Luka Vušković’s second-half equalizer. To make matters worse, Dortmund won their games on both of those matchdays, cutting the deficit at the top of the table from ten points down to just six. 

Bayern have since responded. A controversial early red card for Hoffenheim’s Kevin Akpoguma helped the league leaders romp to a 5-1 victory on February 8th, with Luis Diaz helping himself to a hat trick in addition to Harry Kane’s pair of penalties. Dortmund’s win away at Wolfsburg kept the points deficit at six, still sizable, but not impossible.

Fans will be kept on the edge of their seats throughout the Bundesliga title race run-in, of that there is no doubt. But if there were any doubts, then the release of a brand-new betting site should alleviate them once and for all. Borussia Dortmund (A) – February 28th 

German football doesn’t get any bigger than Der Klassiker, and on February 28th, one of the biggest installments of the storied rivalry will take center stage as Bayern head to Signal Iduna Park to face rivals Borussia Dortmund in a genuine six-pointer. The Bavarians will know that victory will all but seal the title, putting them nine points clear with just ten games remaining. However, lose, and that gap is cut to just three points, and BVB will be buoyed to rip the Meisterschale away from Vincent Kompany’s men. 

While Bayern wobbled in the fortnight before that Hoffenheim victory, Dortmund most certainly have not. Niko Kovač’s side has won each of its last five games, scoring 14 goals in the process. If they can continue that form into Der Klassiker, then Bayern could well have a problem to solve in front of a raucous Signal Iduna Park. 

Bayer Leverkusen (A) – March 14th 

Exactly a fortnight on from the trip to Dortmund, they must also then head to the BayArena to face Bayer Leverkusen. Die Werkself are the only team other than Bayern to win the Bundesliga in the last 13 years, famously winning the Meisterschale for the first time back in 2024 under Xabi Alonso. And they won the title in a fashion that Germany’s biggest club never has: Undefeated. 

In the two years since, Leverkusen have endured somewhat of a fall from grace. However, they are unbeaten in their last three games and have registered away victories against both RB Leipzig and Stuttgart in recent weeks. Another impressive performance against Bayern on March 14th could open the door for an unlikely Dortmund coronation. 

Freiburg (A) – Weekend Beginning April 3rd 

Freiburg have finished in the top six of the Bundesliga in three of the last four seasons, and this term they are aiming for a similar impressive finish. Their recent 1-0 defeat away at Stuttgart saw them slide to seventh in the table, but perhaps more importantly than that, the Breisgau-Brasilianer haven’t lost a home game at Europa-Park since the opening day of the season. 

Augsburg managed to steal a 3-1 victory in the curtain raiser back on August 23rd. Since then, Freiburg have been unbeaten in nine straight home games, six of them being victories, including most recently a 1-0 win against Werder Bremen on February 7th. If they remain in that kind of form and in European contention by the time Bayern visit on the weekend beginning April 3rd, there is a very real prospect of the Bavarians dropping points and handing the initiative in the title race to Dortmund. 

Mainz (A) – Weekend Beginning April 24th 

Is there any place that Bayern hate visiting more than Mainz’s Mewa Arena? If recent history is anything to go by, there shouldn’t be. 

Bayern have won just once in their last five league visits to the home of Die Nullfünfer, a run that includes four defeats. Last season, a double from Lee Jae-sung saw Mainz pick up a 2-1 win and hand the Bavarians their first defeat of the season. If a similar story transpires this term, Dortmund will be licking their lips and potentially be in command of the driver’s seat with just three games to go.
