The future of Alejandro Garnacho reportedly “holds the key” to Manchester United’s transfer business during the January window.

The 20-year-old has been heavily linked with an Old Trafford exit this month, amid interest from Chelsea and Napoli, and his potential departure could be required in order to sign reinforcements before Deadline Day.

Garnacho has started three of Man Utd’s last four fixtures, but the club may be forced to sell him in order to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules, as per Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.

Chelsea appear best placed to land the Argentina international, due to Man Utd’s asking price of at least €70 million, and a move for Garnacho could enable Christopher Nkunku to move in the opposite direction on loan.

Furthermore, selling Garnacho would help Man Utd in their pursuit of Lecce star Patrick Dorgu, as per Sheth.

Lecce are determined to keep Dorgu as they look to stave off relegation to Serie B and although Man Utd are in advanced talks to sign the Denmark star, they will not pay over the odds to land him this month.

However, the Red Devils are eager to sign Dorgu before the January window closes and Tyrell Malacia will be allowed to leave Old Trafford on loan if a deal for the Lecce defender is finalised.

As a result, Garnacho could cause a transfer domino effect if he leaves Man Utd this month.

What has Ruben Amorim said about Alejandro Garnacho?

Following Man Utd’s 1-0 win over Fulham on Sunday, Amorim was asked whether Garnacho will still be at the club when the January window closes.

“That, nobody knows,” the Red Devils boss replied. “Anything can happen.”

Amorim added: “He is improving in every part of the game, the understanding, when to defend. I am trying to find the best position for him, today he played a bit open, not so inside. We need guys who can play one vs one.”

Garnacho has three-and-a-half years remaining on his current Man Utd contract, while his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) stands at €37.1m.
