Gary Neville hilariously tried his best to get Manchester United‘s contest against Liverpool postponed by jokingly shovelling snow back onto the Anfield pitch.

Neville’s beloved United travel to Merseyside on Sunday afternoon searching for a shock result against Arne Slot‘s Premier League leaders, with the hosts favouring another demolition job of their arch rivals.

However, there was concern the game wouldn’t go ahead due to severe snow that has swept across England during the course of the weekend and left Anfield blanketed.

A safety inspection was carried out by officials at midday and the match was later given the green light to go ahead, but Neville – like many United supporters – was evidently hoping for a postponement.

United arrive at the home of their nemesis for the first time of new manager Ruben Amorim amid a disastrous run of form that leaves the club languishing 14th in the league standings and Neville is fearing the worst for his former club.

While his Sky Sports co-host and Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher attempted to clear snow of the Anfield pitch on Sunday morning in a bid to make sure the match went ahead, Neville did the opposite.

The ex-United right-back instead shovelled snow that Carragher had removed back onto the Anfield turf in a hilarious exchange between the pair.

Both continued the exchange for a few seconds and laughed along as Neville’s joke attempt to have the match moved to another day ultimately failed.

The 49-year-old later filmed a pitchside video confirming the game would go ahead as originally planned much to the dismay of Neville himself who is worried United could be embarrassed by Liverpool.

‘Well here we are, some debate as to whether the game would be on or off but it’s on and there’s the pitch at Anfield.

‘Bit of snow still left on it, a little bit of light drizzle, call it off, it’s not playable,’ Neville joked.

Carragher later told Neville’s viewers that the pitch was ‘playable’, but ex-United full-back Patrice Evra pleaded with his former team-mate to get more snow on the grass.

Commented on Neville’s video, Evra joked: ‘Captain can you put more snow soo they call it off please,’ alongside a collection of heart and laughing emojis.

Meanwhile, Liverpool confirmed the match would be on despite the adverse weather, posting on X: ‘Today’s fixture against Manchester United will go ahead as planned. Two safety meetings were held earlier to assess the weather and travel conditions.

‘We thank everyone involved in helping us to get this game on today. If you’re travelling to Anfield then please take extra care. We look forward to seeing you there.
