Gian Piero Gasperini feels ‘a real party atmosphere’ between Atalanta and his old club Genoa this evening, while looking forward to Mateo Retegui being crowned Capocannoniere.

It kicks off at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, also known as Marassi, at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT, 20.45 CET).

This is the only Serie A Week 37 fixture to be played today, because all the other games are still decisive for something, whether it is the Scudetto, Europe or relegation.

“It has been another season full of satisfaction, although with so many games played every few days, time flies and you don’t always realise it,” Gasperini told DAZN.

“Now we are here celebrating a wonderful achievement.”

Atalanta secured third place and Champions League qualification, while Genoa are comfortably mid-table under Patrick Vieira.

Gasperini will always have a special bond with Genoa, having been their coach from 2006-2010 and again from 2013 to 2016.

“It is marvellous for me being back here, the atmosphere is ideal for football, and finally I am here in a situation where Genoa are relaxed too at achieving their targets. It is a real party atmosphere.”

Retegui close to Capocannoniere title

Although there are many changes to the Atalanta starting XI, Gasperini still starts Retegui, who has equalled Pippo Inzaghi’s record of 24 goals in a single season for La Dea in 1996-97, and is on the verge of being crowned Serie A Capocannoniere.

How much of this incredible campaign was down to the coaching?

“It’s far more his credit than mine, he scored with his head, the right foot, the left foot. He was extraordinary in the first part of the season, the second was tougher for everyone really,” noted Gasperini.

“He made the most of this opportunity and as he said will share this possible title with the whole team.”
