Ghana ‘approach Man United starlet Kobbie Mainoo over switching international allegiance from England’ in stunning move amid 18-year-old’s brilliant run of form

Kobbie Mainoo is reportedly being targeted by the Ghanaian Football Association over a potential switch of allegiances on the international stage.

The Manchester United starlet has erupted on the scene recently with a number of performances for Erik ten Hag‘s team that bely his youth, understandably drawing a number of eyes.

His displays of late have earned him widespread praise, and after netting a dramatic 97th minute winner against Wolves on Thursday he was dubbed ‘a generational talent’ by team-mate Rasmus Hojlund.

Another team-mate, Bruno Fernandes, was also quick to pile on the plaudits, claiming that he had noticed the ability that Mainoo has ‘two or three years ago’, and now the Ghana FA are beginning to take note too.

A member of the Ghana FA told The Times that they are already looking at Mainoo, and are ‘interested in’ persuading him to ditch the Three Lions for the African giants.

‘The Ghana Football Association is interested in monitoring, attracting, and persuading all eligible talents for its various national teams,’ said Randy Abbey, of the executive council at the Ghana FA.

‘Kobbie is definitely one of such incredible talents, and the Association will love to work with him and many like him home and abroad.’

The player has represented England at three different youth levels to date, winning six caps at the Under-19s.  However, he is yet to make his debut for the senior side – something the English FA and Gareth Southgate will surely be aware of.

Given his impressive showings for United of late he could begin to put pressure on Southgate to include him in his senior squads.

With the Three Lions in action at the European Championship later this year, a series of similarly strong performances could leave him with an outside chance of a call-up.

Mail Sport reported back in November that the FA were confident of keeping hold of Mainoo.

Ghana will perhaps be looking to rebuild after a poor showing at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Chris Hughton’s side failed to make it past the group stage, with the former Brighton boss duly sacked as a result.

Mainoo scored a stunning winner in the 97th minute of the game to seal all three points

It was the teenager’s first ever goal in the Premier League having netted in the FA Cup last weekend

After scoring a stunner to seal a 4-3 win over Wolves on Thursday night, the player admitted: ‘It’s a dream come true at such a tough place to come.

‘They’ve had a good home run here so we needed the win but I’ve still not come down from it – I still feel like I’m dreaming to be honest, so you’ll have to give me a second!’

‘To start playing in the Premier League for my boyhood club has been amazing.

‘Now I’m just looking to get a good run of games and keep winning games, keep winning games and get a bit of momentum going.’
