AC Milan striker Santiago Gimenez assures he will be back ‘stronger than ever’ after undergoing surgery on his ankle, as he’s expected to be out for two months.

The centre-forward has been struggling with a recurring ankle issue for a while and there were no signs of improvement, as when he did return to training, the pain would flare up again.

Following a specialist consultation, the Mexico international agreed with Milan medical staff to have surgery in Amsterdam.

It was arthroscopic debridement of the right ankle, performed by Professor Gino Kerkhoffs in the presence of Rossoneri medical staff.

He will remain in Amsterdam for one week and then travel to Italy to begin the rehabilitation programme, but is expected to be out for a couple of months.

Gimenez posted a picture of himself in the hospital bed on Instagram along with this message for supporters.

“Everything went really well! Thank you very much everyone for your support, your love and your messages.

“Now it is time to get back to 100 per cent with a lot of work and discipline. We will be stronger than ever, see you soon!”

Meanwhile, Milan are ready to sign a new forward in the January transfer window, in negotiations with West Ham United to take Niclas Fullkrug on loan.
