Ginter on Freiburg without Streich: “Difficult to imagine.”

In an interview with Germany’s “Sportbuzzer” website, SC Freiburg defender Matthias Ginter commented on the potential departure of the trainer under whom he’s made 180 professional appearances.

Matthias Ginter has served under legendary SC Freiburg trainer Christian Streich for quite a long time. The 51-times-capped German international has made 180 appearances for the SCF gaffer during his two stints (2012-14 and 2022-present) with the Breisgau club. Accordingly, it remains very hard for the 30-year-old to envision life at Freiburg without the coach who groomed him as both a youth and professional.

Ginter – a native of Freiburg – was asked what it might feel like to represent his hometown club without Streich in an interview with Germany’s “Sportbuzzer” website. With an announcement that Streich might be departing the only club he’s ever worked at after nearly three decades as an active part of the organization potentially looming early next week, Ginter could only express his consternation at such a reality.

“It’s difficult to imagine,” Ginter said of the 58-year-old “Perhaps he would consider another offer if he was ten years younger and hadn’t spent so much time with the club. Given his history and attachment to the club, I can hardly see him trying something else. With his personality and footballing knowledge, I do have no doubts that he could be successful elsewhere.”

Streich’s current deal with Freiburg expires at the end of the season. One of German football’s elder statesmen has refrained from signing long-term contract extensions for the last several years. One assumes that, should he decide to renew after all, Streich will only sign a one-year-deal.
