Gladbach vs. Werder Bremen preview: Visitors hoping to maintain unbeaten away record

Werder Bremen will look to maintain their unbeaten away record when they travel to Borussia-Park for Sunday’s Bundesliga clash with Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Gladbach will head into matchday nine in 11th place after taking 10 points from eight matches. After losing three of their first four league games, die Fohlen have gone on to win two, draw one and lose one of their next four matches in the Bundesliga. Gerardo Seoane’s side claimed home wins against Union Berlin and Heidenheim on either side of a narrow away defeat in their away meeting with Augsburg.

Last weekend, die Fohlen played out a 1-1 draw against Mainz, with Tim Kleindienst scoring in the second half to cancel out Stefan Lainer’s own goal. While they may left the MEWA Arena with a point, the result extended Gladbach’s winless away run to three matches. Unfortunately for Gladbach, they experienced another unsuccessful road trip in midweek, losing 2-1 in their DFB-Pokal clash with Eintracht Frankfurt.

Die Fohlen will be looking forward to returning to Borussia-Park, where they will have the opportunity to record three consecutive home league wins for the first time since December 2023.

Werder Bremen

Bremen are sitting two points above Gladbach in ninth place after winning three, drawing three and losing two of their eight league matches. Bremen began the Bundesliga season with a three-game unbeaten run, before they were stopped in their tracks by a heavy 5-0 defeat to Bayer Munich.

Ole Werner’s side have gone on to win two of their next four league matches (D1, L1), with both of those victories taking place on their travels. They came from three goals down to beat Hoffenheim 4-3 on matchday five, before they scored four more away goals in a win over Wolfsburg on matchday seven.

They followed their victory against Wolfsburg with a hard-fought draw in last Saturday’s home clash with Bayer Leverkusen. Bremen came from behind on two occasions to hold the champions to a 2-2 draw at the Weserstadion. Marvin Ducksch netted an equaliser in the 74th minute, before Roman Schmid scored a 90th-minute leveller after a Felix Agu own goal had given Leverkusen a 2-1 lead.

Ducksch got back on the scoresheet in midweek, scoring the decisive goal in a 1-0 victory over Paderborn in the Pokal. After moving into the next round, Bremen will now turn their focus to Sunday’s away game, where they will look to continue their impressive form on the road. Bremen have taken 10 points from their first four away games, helping extend their overall unbeaten away run to six Bundesliga matches.
