After being deemed surplus to requirements, Leon Goretzka was told he was free to leave Bayern Munich before the start of the season.
However, the central midfielder gritted his teeth, fought for his place and is now a regular starter once again.
In light of his fine form, Goretzka was asked at a press conference on Monday about the possibility of a return to the national team, for whom he hasn’t played since November 2023.
The 30-year-old replied that he hasn’t had any contact with Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann lately, but that he remains hopeful of representing his country again in the future.
“I’ve not been in touch with Julian Nagelsmann,” Goretzka told reporters, adding:
“I’ve played every game for my country with pride and hope there are more to come. If Julian calls, I’ll answer and talk to him.”
Goretzka has played 57 games for Germany, racking up 14 goals and 11 assists.
