After a tough start to the season with little game time, Leon Goretzka has battled his way back into the Bayern München team.

The 29-year-old central midfielder made his second start in three games since the turn of the year against Wolfsburg on Saturday and repaid the faith shown in him with an impressive brace in Bayern’s 3-2 win.

“I think he showed that you always have to be professional in your situation,” Bayern coach Vincent Kompany told Sky Germany after the game, praising Goretzka.

“It’s not just Leon, it happens all the time in a squad or in a career. If you do your job and stay calm, your qualities always come to the fore. That’s great for us,” he continued.

Bayern dominated Saturday’s game against Wolfsburg, outshooting the visitors 25-7, but Mohamed Amoura’s 88th-minute strike provided a late scare.

“Sometimes you have to fight to the end and that’s what we did,” said Kompany, who was delighted to see his side hold on for the win.

“We defended well twice at the end and were always dangerous. It was a very, very important win.”
