Albert Gudmundsson is set to leave the Iceland national team camp early and return to Fiorentina for further tests on a possible ankle issue he picked up while away with his country according to Sunday’s reports.

Gudmundsson withdraws from Iceland camp and returns to Fiorentina

Gudmundsson was a starter and was on the scoresheet for Iceland’s 5-0 win over Azerbaijan on Friday evening, but has since undergone medical tests with his national team on a potential ankle injury.

Initial reports on Saturday claimed that Gudmundsson would stay with the Iceland squad, as there were no major concerns regarding his fitness, however, updates from La Gazzetta dello Sport on Sunday confirm that the player has returned to his club after all.

The decision was reportedly taken to not risk Gudmundsson for Iceland’s upcoming World Cup qualifier away against France, scheduled for Tuesday evening.

The player will instead return to Tuscany and undergo further assessments in order to understand the full extent of his ankle issue.

La Gazzetta dello Sport maintains that Gudmundsson’s injury is not serious and not a major cause for concern, however, it remains to be seen whether he will be available to Stefano Pioli in time for Fiorentina’s upcoming Serie A match against Napoli on September 13.
