Speaking to German public broadcaster ARD following his first competitive match in nearly a year, RB Leipzig keeper Peter Gulacsi deferred on the question as to whether he expected to receive his starting spot back.

Former RB Leipzig captain Peter Gulacsi received his first start in-between the sticks since October 5th 2022 last night. An ACL rupture has sidelined the Hungarian international for nearly a year. Gulacsi was able to help lead his team to victory over SV Wehen Wiesbaden in the Pokal despite conceding two goals. In his post-match-interview, the 33-year-old commented on the prospects of reclaiming his regular role from current starter Janis Blaswich.

“It was an important first step,” Gulacsi said of his start, “I wish to take further steps and get more playing time. [But] I don’t see it as a case of being #1 or #2. I see it as a process of improving step-by-step. I’ve experienced it myself how quickly football can change from one moment to the next.”

Having secured advancement in Germany’s domestic cup, Leipzig now face two daunting challenges in the days ahead. League-leaders FC Bayern München await in Saturday evening’s “Top-Spiel” in the Bundesliga this weekend. After that, the German Red Bulls must face Manchester City in the Champions’ League. Gulacsi noted that he would be prepared to potentially start again.

“When we play every three days, it can happen,” Gulacsi told his interviewer.
