Pep Guardiola has insisted that Erling Haaland isn’t the reason behind Manchester City’s worrying recent form.

The reigning Premier League champions have lost five matches in a row across all competitions and they are now eight points behind league leaders Liverpool in the English top flight table.

Man City were thumped 4-0 by Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday evening to condemn Guardiola to the longest losing streak of his entire managerial career.

It is also the first time that Man City have lost five games in a row for 18 years, but Guardiola has refused to blame Haaland for the club’s dismal run of results.

The Norway international netted 14 goals in his first 12 appearances of the 2024-25 campaign, however he has only scored once in his last four games, while he was an unused substitute during Man City’s Carabao Cup defeat to Tottenham at the end of October.

What has Pep Guardiola said?

Following Man City’s defeat to Tottenham, Guardiola told reporters (via GOAL): “We have four or five wingers, but we only had one. Phil [Foden] was excellent in that position but he’s struggled early with niggles and little things.

“Kevin [De Bruyne] has been injured. That is the reality and we have to adapt. I would say the reason for our lack of goals is not Erling Haaland.

“Without Erling, we would be more in trouble! We are lucky to have Erling. Every game, he has three or four chances. One day he scores two or three.”

Haaland has been heavily linked with a Man City departure over the past few months, with La Liga giants Barcelona and Real Madrid both reportedly eager to finalise a deal next year.

However, Man City are rumoured to be confident that Haaland will sign a new contract at the Etihad Stadium as they look to fend off interest from Spain.
