Hamann criticizes Musiala: “Individualistic and often a solo performer”

Dietmar Hamann has criticized Bayern and Germany prodigy Jamal Musiala, describing him as “individualistic and often a solo performer”.

During the international break, Jamal Musiala received much praise for his performance in Germany’s 5-0 win over Hungary, in which he was directly involved in four goals.

However, he didn’t have the same success against the Netherlands in the following match, and admitted as much after the 2-2 draw.

Commenting on Musiala’s recent performances, former Germany international Dietmar Hamann now criticizes the 21-year-old for relying too much on dribbling and individual efforts.

“You can play successful football with Musiala, but if you look at the last few years, Bayern have mostly relied on individual efforts. This also has to do with Musiala. There is hardly another number 10 in the world who is a pure one-on-one player. That affects the flow of the game,” Hamann wrote in a column for Sky Germany.

“Musiala is individualistic and often a solo performer. If he gets the ball ten times, he puts his head down nine times and starts dribbling.”

Hamann added that if he had to choose between Musiala and Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz, he wouldn’t hesitate to pick the latter.

“Wirtz is a player who sets the scene for Boniface, Frimpong or Adli. He makes his teammates better. From Bayern’s point of view, if I could swap Wirtz and Musiala, I’d do it tomorrow.”

According to Bild, Hamann’s comments haven’t gone down well with Bayern, who plan to address them at their press conference on Friday ahead of this weekend’s match against Holstein Kiel.
