Harry Kane has constantly been linked with a return to the Premier League since signing for German giants Bayern Munich and Liverpool are now among the contenders to sign him

Premier League teams could soon be on red alert as speculation over Harry Kane’s long-term future continues to rumble on, with the England captain keen on the idea of finishing his career back on home soil.

The 31-year-old only joined Bayern Munich 18 months ago in a bid to win silverware and, after a barren maiden season, he looks nailed on to finally end his trophy drought in the coming months. And with that box ticked off, a return back to the top-flight would seemingly not be beyond the realms of possibility.

Talk of where Kane could land if that does come to pass has already begun. His former club Tottenham are inevitably seen to be among the contenders to re-sign him, while their arch-rivals Arsenal have also been mischievously linked. A shock switch to Liverpool has also been touted in new reports emanating from Spain, with the Reds in the market for a new No.9.

Any potential exit could be facilitated due to a release clause written in Kane’s contract at the Allianz Arena. But what’s the truth – and what does the striker think of a Premier League return? Mirror Football takes a look…

Is there a release clause?

Put simply, yes. Although there are a few caveats before it can be activated. It was suggested that the clause sat at £67million in the most recent transfer window – and it was down to Kane to activate it. He chose not to do that, with Kane being happy in Munich. The clause is set to drop in value even further in less than a year’s time, with it being suggested it would be worth around £54million next January. Club officials have unsurprisingly chosen not to publicly comment about the clause.

Kane himself refused to confirm whether there was a clause written into his deal. Speaking last month, he said: “What I can say is that I’m very happy at FC Bayern. No comment on the clause.”

Tottenham would be the outstanding candidates to bring Kane back to the Premier League. He remains the North London side’s all-time top goalscorer with 280 strikes to his name. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has already spoken out on a potential reunion. Asked if the North London side had a buyback clause for Kane, he replied: “Of course.”

But Spurs might face considerable competition for his services, specifically from current league leaders Liverpool. According to Spanish outlet El Nacional, Kane is putting serious consideration into a Premier League return, with Liverpool leading the way for Kane’s services. The Reds could do with adding goals to their side with Mohamed Salah’s contract expiring in the summer, while Darwin Nunez has struggled in front of goal since his big-money move to Anfield.

What is Kane’s stance?

Kane has already confirmed his happiness in Munich, a stance he reiterated last year. “I’m really enjoying my experience in Germany,” he said. “It was a step that I needed in my career for a fresh stimulus, a fresh challenge and new surroundings and I’m really happy that I made the move. My future is at Bayern Munich. I have a four-year contract. I’m enjoying it and hopefully, I will be able to make something special happen this season. If not, I’ll be ready to go again in the summer and turn things around.”

But one thing could potentially tempt Kane back to the Premier League sooner rather than later – Alan Shearer’s all-time goalscoring record. He is just 47 goals behind the record and hinted that it could be something he looks to break later in his career.

“I needed to be playing at the highest level, in the Champions League, trying to win titles every year,” Kane said after signing for Bayern. “When I thought about it and Bayern got in touch, it was a decision I wanted to make.

“People will talk about the record and Shearer, but I’ve got plenty of football left in my career. For now, it’s about trying to achieve things here and trying to push myself and the team to try and reach new levels with this club. That’s all my focus is on right now.”
