Chelsea have reportedly reached an agreement to sell Leo Castledine to Middlesbrough on a permanent deal.
The former England U19 international, who joined Chelsea as a six-year-old, has been in sublime form since arriving at Huddersfield Town on loan in August and he is now set to make the step up to the Championship with Kim Hellberg’s side.
Castledine struggled during a tough loan spell at Shrewsbury last year, but he has excelled this campaign, scoring 12 goals and providing five assists in just 27 games for Huddersfield.
This form has caught the attention of multiple Championship clubs, including Watford, and Middlesbrough have now finalised a deal to secure his signature for an undisclosed fee.
That is according to Fabrizio Romano, who posted on X: “Middlesbrough agree deal to sign Leo Castledine from Chelsea on permanent move, here we go!
“Chelsea accept permanent deal proposal with [an] important sell-on clause included, all agreed with Boro. Medical to follow soon.”
Castledine’s loan agreement with Huddersfield included a January break clause and Chelsea have opted to trigger this option in order to offload him permanently. The 20-year-old made just one first-team appearance during his time with the Blues, which incidentally came against Middlesbrough in the Carabao Cup back in January 2024.
Chelsea agree Leo Castledine sale
Castledine’s imminent exit on a permanent deal will represent Chelsea’s first transfer of the January window, with the club expected to prioritise outgoings this month, despite their poor recent form.
‘Bomb Squad’ members Axel Disasi and Raheem Sterling have both been tipped to depart Stamford Bridge after being frozen out since returning from loan last summer, while academy graduate Tyrique George may also leave the club amid interest from several Premier League teams.
Filip Jorgensen has been identified as a target by Besiktas, although Chelsea are unlikely to sanction an exit as he is viewed as a suitable back-up to Robert Sanchez.
