England midfielder Angel Gomes was sent off as Lille suffered a 2-0 defeat against Sporting Lisbon in their opening Champions League match in Lisbon.

The 24-year-old former Manchester United star made his full debut for the Three Lions in their 2-0 win over Finland last week.

He impressed with his composure and industriousness, with Ian Wright and Roy Keane among those leading his praises.

But Gomes’ memorable month took a hit initially when he was booked for pushing Sporting’s winger Francisco Trincao after 21 minutes.

He was then given his marching order for tripping Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres,  five minutes before the break.

Sporting had created a number of dangerous chances in the first half but were denied by goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier until Gyokeres latched on to a delightful pass from Pedro Goncalves to open the scoring in the 38th.

In the second half, Debast unleashed a superb long-range effort into the top right corner to seal victory for the home side.

The Portuguese club are sixth in the standings and will next face Dutch side PSV Eindhoven on Oct. 1 in the new format, which sees clubs play eight matches in a 36-team league phase in place of the previous group stage.

Meanwhile, Gomes’ contract with Lille expires this summer and reports have suggested he will not extend his stay at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium.

That could leave a host of clubs scrapping for the star, who is now in his fourth season as a regular at Lille following a loan spell at Portuguese clubs Boavista.

Newcastle could be in a battle with Liverpool, Tottenham, and Borussia Dortmund to sign Gomes, as per The Sun.
