Hoeneß on Leweling's national team selection: “We've been working hard with him.”

Speaking at his Friday pre-match press conference, VfB Stuttgart trainer Sebastian Hoeneß commented on Jamie Leweling’s nomination for the German national team.

Jamie Leweling’s late nomination to the German national team lends VfB Stuttgart still more representation with the German Nationalmannschaft. Stuttgart trainer Sebastian Hoeneß commented on the 23-year-old’s selection at great length while speaking at his club’s Friday pre-match presser.

Leweling’s development indeed constitutes quite the rapid rise. Hoeneß mostly used the Nürnberg native off the bench last season. Many were surprised to see Stuttgart exercise a €5 million purchase option on the former Union Berlin attacker this summer.

“It’s crazy as it happened very quickly,” Hoeneß remarked on Friday, “He views it that way too. I already knew that he plays a big role in Julian’s considerations. And apparently they were so big that he was at the top of the list of replacements. That’s sensational for him and for all of us.”

“Some had the impression that he was a poor finisher,” Hoeneß went on to say, “We’ve been working with him on cleaning up his game and actions. Now he’s effective [at finishing] too. He is able to finish well with a very good shooting technique using both his right and left foot and he is also good at crossing.”

“He has taken the right steps,” Hoeneß concluded, “He possesses a profile that is exciting for any coach. That’s the information I passed on when [Bundestrainer Julian Nagelsmann] requested it. He [Leweling] has always been willing [to work].”
