With Thomas Müller’s contract with Bayern Munich due to expire at the end of the season, the 35-year-old’s future is up in the air.

Since Vincent Kompany took over as Bayern coach last summer, Müller has been used mainly as a substitute and unless that changes, the Bavarian club’s honorary president Uli Hoeness believes he should stop playing.

“As a person and as a member of the team, I would extend his contract anytime. But if the situation is such that he is always a substitute, I would advise him to retire,” Hoeness told ran at the premiere of the documentary ‘Thomas Müller –  Einer wie keiner’.

“It wouldn’t be worthy of his great career to end up on the bench as a substitute. I’d like to spare him that,” he continued.

Hoeness added that he could see Müller working for Bayern in some capacity after his playing days are over.

“I don’t think he’d be a coach, but he could fill almost any other position at the club, he has all the qualifications,” Hoeness said.
