Hoeness’ comments prompt Bayern to speed up talks with Müller

Uli Hoeness recently made a very honest statement about Thomas Müller’s future – and it seems the Bayern honorary president’s comments have led to talks with the 35-year-old becoming a higher priority.

Earlier this week, Bayern Munich honorary president Uli Hoeness advised Thomas Müller to retire from football unless his current role as a substitute changes.

“As a person and as a member of the team, I would extend his contract anytime. But if the situation is such that he is always a substitute, I would advise him to retire,” Hoeness said at the premiere of the documentary ‘Thomas Müller –  Einer wie keiner’.

Now, according to a Bild report, Hoeness’ comments have prompted Bayern to give talks with the 35-year-old, who is out of contract this summer, a higher priority.

After initial talks in November, negotiations were due to continue in April, but could now take place earlier.

The main sticking point is Müller’s reported salary of 17 million a year, which can no longer be justified from a sporting point of view.

The 35-year-old, however, would be willing to take a pay cut and, according to Bild, the sporting aspect is of secondary importance to him.

Müller himself doesn’t mind being a substitute and isn’t considering calling time on his career.

If and when it’s time for him to call time on his Bayern career, he could be tempted by a short spell in the United States before eventually calling time on his career.
