Aston Villa have amassed the perfect momentum heading into their tantalising Champions League quarter-final clash against Paris Saint-Germain. Unai Emery, 53, has already taken the Midlanders on a magical ride in their first ever campaign since the competition was re-branded from the European Cup to the Champions League in 1992.

They have already claimed incredible victories against the likes of Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig and Celtic, while also demolishing Club Brugge 6-1 on aggregate in the round-of-16. But the biggest challenge of the Spaniard’s time at Villa is now here, as they travel to Paris to face Luis Enrique’s imperious side.

After losing three of their first five Champions League matches, PSG won their final three group-stage games and overcame Brest 10-0 on aggregate in the play-offs. They then went on to knock Liverpool out in the round of 16, seeing off Arne Slot’s side on penalties at Anfield.

Yet, Villa will have plenty of belief having won seven consecutive matches in all competitions. As Emery and their players embark on their biggest match of the campaign so far, Mirror Football takes you through everything you need to know,

Who could PSG or Aston Villa face in the semi-final?

Unai Emery, Manager of Aston Villa, speaks to the media in a post match press conference after the UEFA Champions League 2024/25 Round of 16 Second Leg match between Aston Villa FC and Club Brugge KV at Villa Park on March 12, 2025 in Birmingham, England

Villa may be newbies in the Champions League, but few managers are as experienced in European football as Emery – he knows it will not be wise to look past PSG. However, a victory over his former side will see Villa take on one of Arsenal or Real Madrid.

Liverpool’s failure to overcome Enrique’s side saw Villa skip an all-English double-header against the Merseysiders. Should Arsenal overcome the reigning champions and Villa navigate their way past the currently irresistible PSG, than the two historic British sides will face off in the semi-finals.

On the other side of the tournament tree, Harry Kane and Bayern Munich take on Inter Milan and Barcelona host Borussia Dortmund.

How dangerous are Paris Saint-Germain?

PSG coach Luis Enrique celebrates the victory following the penalty shootout ot the UEFA Champions League 2024/25 UEFA Champions League 2024/25 Round of 16 Second Leg match between Liverpool FC and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) at Anfield on March 11, 2025 in Liverpool, England

When it comes to their European and domestic form, there is an argument to say PSG are currently the best team on the planet. They are leading Ligue 1 by 22 points and are yet to lose a single domestic match.

While they needed a penalty shootout to overcome Liverpool, many believe they were the better team in the tie. They would have crushed the Reds in the first-leg were it not for a miracle performance from Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

Villa will need to be at their absolute best if they are to overcome the Parisians and book themselves a place in the semi-final of Europe’s elite competition.
