Huddersfield 1-1 Southampton: Saints miss chance to go third as late Ben Jackson strike cancels out Adam Armstrong’s opener

  • Ben Jackson struck three minutes from time as they continue to battle relegation

Ben Jackson scored a dramatic late equaliser as Championship strugglers Huddersfield denied Southampton victory.

Adam Armstrong put Saints ahead on the stroke of half-time with a neat finish from namesake Stuart Armstrong’s neat left-wing cross.

Darren Moore’s Terriers were fairly awful during the first half but they improved markedly after the break and were rewarded in the 87th minute.

Wing-back Jackson curled in a left-footed cross from the right flank which evaded everyone and flew into Gavin Bazuna’s net, sparking wild home celebrations.

Town have now won just once in 10 games since Moore arrived to succeed the axed Neil Warnock in September.

They will take heart from their second-half performance, though, and were ultimately good value for their point thanks to Jackson’s first goal of the season.

Saints are now unbeaten in nine games but they will be kicking themselves for letting three points slip through their fingers on a bitterly cold afternoon in West Yorkshire.

Russell Martin’s visitors dominated the opening 45 minutes but Adam Armstrong volley straight at Terriers goalkeeper Chris Maxwell inside the opening quarter of the match.

Moments later, Jaheim Headley threatened for the hosts with a left-foot shot which he dragged just wide.

Huddersfield were then dealt a low in the 20th minute when striker Kian Harratt was forced off through injury and replaced by Yuta Nakayama.

The crowd did not approve of Moore’s choice of replacement for his injured frontman with chants of ‘you don’t know what you’re doing’ emanating from the home stands.

Saints continued to probe and were rewarded on the stroke of half-time when Will Smallbone’s neat pass found Stuart Armstrong and his low delivery was fired home by Adam Armstrong.

Yet Huddersfield improved markedly after the break and Josh Koroma had an effort well saved by Bazuna.

Sorba Thomas then headed wide before the equaliser came when Jackson’s intended cross flew through a thicket of players and nestled in the far corner of the net.
