“I don’t see the point”: Matthäus puzzled by Sané’s inclusion in Bayern’s Club World Cup squad

Lothar Matthäus can’t understand why Leroy Sané is representing Bayern Munich at the Club World Cup, now that he has signed for Galatasaray.

Even though he no longer has a future at the club, Leroy Sané is representing Bayern Munich at the Club World Cup until his contract expires at the end of the month, and he is joining Galatasaray as a free agent.

According to Bayern, Sané is part of the squad because he personally requested to be included. But for club legend Lothar Matthäus, the decision doesn’t make sense.

“I can’t understand why he’s even part of the Club World Cup squad – especially since he didn’t play on Sunday,” Matthäus wrote in his column for Sky, referring to Bayern’s 10-0 win over Auckland City, where Sané remained an unused substitute.

“Maybe he’ll still get a run-out, but I don’t see the point in bringing him along when you’ve already got Gnabry, Coman, and also young players in that position who are eager to show what they can do.”

While Matthäus criticized Sané’s inclusion in the squad, he expressed full understanding for the winger’s decision to move on.

“Leroy is a difference-maker, but maybe he didn’t show enough in Munich and got a lot of criticism from the media and fans. I also had the impression that not everyone at the club was behind him from the start. I can understand why he decided to pull the plug and head to Istanbul,” he stated, adding:

“Galatasaray is a club that plays in the Champions League, is ambitious, and is run in a serious, professional way. I believe the Turkish league is much stronger than people in Germany give it credit for – even if it’s not quite on the same level as the Bundesliga or Premier League.”
