Arsenal could make a ‘real statement of ambition’ and would ‘destroy the opposition’ if they signed Marcus Rashford, according to one of their former stars.

Rashford admitted this week that he was ready to leave Manchester United for a new challenge following reports that his boyhood club were also looking to cash in on their academy graduate.

The 27-year-old is one of United’s highest earners and any move would likely represent a significant outlay but ex-Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna has admitted he would ‘love’ his old side to sign Rashford.

“I would love to see Rashford at Arsenal,” Sagna said “I think if you added Rashford to Arsenal’s attack, with the pace that he has, Arsenal would destroy the opposition. Adding Rashford to an extremely talented squad would be a frightening prospect for Arsenal’s rivals.

“I think Arsenal having Rashford would enable Arsenal to have more variety in attack and I would love to see Gabriel Jesus and Marcus Rashford in the same team, pressing with so much intensity. Rashford joining Arsenal would be a wonderful signing for the club and a real statement of ambition.

“He hasn’t been at his best, but when that happens you need support and a good environment to bring you back to your best level. You need your teammates and your manager to lift you up. You need people to believe in you.”

Arsenal unlikely to renew interest in Rashford

Rashford has endured a difficult time for United recently, scoring just 11 goals in his last 48 Premier League games and being dropped by Ruben Amorim for the Carabao Cup quarter-final against Tottenham.

Arsenal had tentatively had Rashford on their shortlist during the summer but a move was deemed as too difficult to achieve financially and the Gunners are not currently positioning themselves to renew their interest.

Rashford future still remains in doubt with no obvious options for the England star to leave Old Trafford, although teams in Saudi Arabia could make a move in the summer.

The forward is believed to prefer a move to Spain but no teams have registered an interest as of yet, with Rashford likely to need to lower his wage demands before a transfer is possible.
