Manchester United have been handed a timely double-injury boost with two key first-team stars nearing a return to full fitness ahead of the international break.

United’s dismal start to the new Premier League season has seen them suffer hard-hitting defeats against the likes of Liverpool, Tottenham and West Ham prior to Erik ten Hag being sacked.

The Dutchman’s dugout exit coincided with a host of injuries to key players, most notably in defence where the Red Devils have conceded 12 goals in 10 games and have a goal difference of -3.

Their defensive struggles have been made worse by summer acquisition Matthijs de Ligt struggling to deliver on the potential he arrived with, while veteran defender Jonny Evans has played more games than supporters expected him to.

Meanwhile, in midfield, United have struggled in the absence of Kobbie Mainoo after the England breakthrough star suffered a muscle injury in October, but is nearing a return to fitness.

However, incoming boss Ruben Amorim will be boosted by the imminent return of two first-team stars after the pair posted themselves going through fitness drills on social media.

Harry Maguire and Toby Collyer have both been absent in recent weeks after suffering respective injuries but are now close to being integrated back into the first-team.

Sharing an update on Instagram, Maguire posted a story showing the duo training together on exercise bikes at the club’s Carrington training complex.

Updating United fans on their injury recovery, Maguire beamed in the photo and captioned his post tagging Collyer stating: ‘Rehab partner’ and ‘back soon’.

20-year-old Collyer hasn’t featured since United’s convincing 7-0 Carabao Cup hammering of Barnsley midway through September, while Maguire has been injured since hobbling off in the club’s goalless draw against Aston Villa last month.

The pair will be hoping they can make an impact on United’s new head coach Amorim, when the Portuguese manager starts his role at the club on Monday morning.

The new United chief will also be boosted by the return of Leny Yoro and Mainoo as both step up their respective recoveries from frustrating injuries.

Amorim will use the upcoming international break to get to grips with his squad that has so far failed to deliver on the huge outlay the club’s INEOS-backed board spent on new recruits.

Meanwhile, Ruud van Nistelrooy will oversee his last match in interim charge against Leicester on Sunday with it yet to be seen if he will stay on at the club.
