An incredible record held by Manchester City has come to an an following their loss against Tottenham.

City were thumped 4-0 in their own back yard, with James Maddison scoring a quick-fire first half brace.

Pedro Porro and Brennan Johnson then scored on either side of the second-half to condemn City to a rare home loss.

The champions had been on a 52-match unbeaten run at the Etihad prior to Saturday’s shock defeat.

Their last home loss in the Premier League was against Brentford in November 2022 when Ivan Toney scored a brace, including a 98th minute winner.

It is also City’s largest home defeat since moving from Maine Road in 2003 and the joint-heaviest Guardiola has ever suffered.

Guardiola afterwards admitted his side are ‘fragile defensively’ and challenged his players to bounce back from yet another setback.

‘In this moment we are fragile defensively. We started really well as normal but we could not score and then after that we conceded. After that we conceded some more which is difficult for our emotions right now,’ the City boss said speaking to the BBC.

‘In eight years we have never lived this kind of situation. Now we have to live it and break it winning the next games, especially the next one. Now we see things in one way, maybe in a few weeks we see it differently.’

On his players’ struggles, Guardiola added: ‘Of course. We are happy when we win and concerned when we don’t win. It’s normal. There would be a problem if they were not worried or I am not worried.

‘We are not used to doing this situation but life is like this. Sometimes it happens and we have to accept it. It is what it is now and we will stand up and do it.’

City will seek to end their poor run of form and return to winning ways when they host dutch side Feyenoord in the Champions League on Tuesday.
