Inter have confirmed that goalkeeper Yann Sommer has successfully undergone surgery on his fractured thumb and that he will begin the rehabilitation process in the coming days, which leaves Josep Martinez as the go-to stopper for the next few Serie A, Coppa Italia and Champions League fixtures.

Inter confirmed on Thursday that Sommer had suffered a fractured thumb in training, and that he’d had initial medical tests to diagnose the severity of the injury.

Updates from the club on Friday confirm that he has gone under the knife, and that the surgery at the Humanitas Pio X Institute in the city of Milan went to plan on Friday.

Inter have also confirmed that Sommer will begin the rehabilitation process at the beginning of next week.

How many games will Sommer miss for Inter?

Initial assessments suggest that Sommer will be out of action for a minimum of three weeks, if not slightly longer.

He will, of course, be unavailable for Saturday’s Serie A match against Genoa, with Martinez expected to replace him. He will also miss the Coppa Italia quarter-final against Lazio on Thursday.

Inter will also be without their first choice for the crucial, potential Serie A title decider against league leaders Napoli next weekend.

As things stand, Martinez is also expected in both legs of the Champions League round of 16 against Feyenoord, and the Serie A match against Monza that falls between the two European fixtures.

Three weekends’ time will be the Inter-Atalanta match, which is also likely to be one too soon for Sommer’s return.
