Carlos Augusto explains the ‘teamwork’ behind his goal against Atalanta, while Lautaro Martinez feels Inter were ‘superior for the whole’ match and ‘believe’ in the Treble.

The Nerazzurri were dealing with quite a few injury problems going into Bergamo, knowing a defeat would have them caught at the top of the table by both La Dea and Napoli on 61 points.

However, Carlos Augusto’s free header opened the scoring from a Hakan Calhanoglu corner, then Lautaro Martinez’s powerful angled drive sealed the 2-0 result.

Both Ederson and Alessandro Bastoni saw red late on, along with Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini, as the Scudetto battle concluded in a tense atmosphere.

“It was great teamwork, we knew this was a difficult match, but we started determined, hungry and got the performance we wanted,” Carlos Augusto told DAZN.

“I thank Calhanoglu, as we work during the week on set plays and these routines. We fought to the end.”

The Brazilian celebrated his goal by tapping his wrist where a watch would be, so what does that mean?

“A friend of mine in Brazil does that when we play, so I do it for him.”

Lautaro Martinez now has seven goals against Atalanta in 14 competitive meetings, along with three assists.

“It was teamwork, we prepared in the best possible way and recovered energy, because we knew Atalanta would make us work hard, man for man all over the pitch. We prepared with the staff and needed a lot of energy for this match,” Lautaro Martinez told DAZN.

“It was a deserved victory, as for the whole 90 minutes I felt we were superior to Atalanta with our passing, possession and quality, we could’ve scored more goals, but we take the three important points.”

Inter are the only Italian team still in three tournaments, as they booked a Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich and will play Milan in the Coppa Italia semi-final. Does Lautaro Martinez believe in the Treble?

“It might seem as if we don’t want to say it, but we certainly believe. We are a strong team, at times the results come, others they don’t, it’s tough when playing every three days with so much travel. It will be difficult, but we will give our all, because we want to win every game we play, that is our mentality and we want to continue like this.”
