Liverpool striker Alexander Isak might have hoped that fronting up to the media might have quietened criticism over his recent performances, but it appears to have had the opposite effect.

The Premier League record signing has struggled to make an impact at Anfield after going on strike this summer to force through a €145 million move.

Isak did net in last weekend’s 2-0 win over West Ham United but was not on the scoresheet as the Reds were subsequently held by Sunderland in midweek.

With just two goals to his credit, the striker has failed to live up to his billing and fans are already concerned that he is set to become an expensive flop.

The striker has not been helped by Liverpool’s overall form, which sees the defending champions ninth in the Premier League.

What did Alexander Isak say?

Isak took an interview with Sky Sports in which he admitted he has been below par and does not need anyone to tell him he has not been up to scratch.

He said: “It’s not been easy of course individually and also collectively. It’s not been… we’ve not had the best results lately. Of course, I wish more from me as well. So, yeah, I think that’s pretty obvious. But yeah, I’m trying to stay positive. We as a team as well. It’s a really good group and we are just looking forward and trying to do better as a team

“I expect to do much more. Of course, I always do that even when I do really well. I want more. So that’s not a problem for me. I’m trying to stay positive, trying to work to do better. And that’s what I’m looking to do.”

Reaction to Isak’s comments: What did the fans think?

Isak’s interview was greeted cooly by fans, who were unimpressed with his attitude.

“That was like drawing blood from a stone. Have never seen an interviewer have to ask so many questions in an eight-minute interview. Isak made him earn his money,” one fan said.

Another added: “He put as much enthusiasm into that interview as he does on the pitch!”

Some fans are concerned for Isak’s mental health, with one pointing out: “Body language, posture and speech are all off. A reflection where he is mentally.”

A Newcastle fan chimed in: “Loved him at the Toon. Never seen him this downbeat. You reap what you sow.”

The sentiment towards Isak’s interview was generally negative, but it was not wholly so, with some supporters pleased he fronted up.

“I’m glad he came out and spoke, unlike Salah, who has been a ghost ever since he said Arsenal are the favourites,” one Liverpool supporter said.
