Isak to Liverpool twist with ‘record offer prepared’ and Newcastle concerned

Alexander Isak has emerged as a standout target for Liverpool as they aim to add a new striker to their squad and the Newcastle star’s future has taken a fresh turn which could offer the Reds hope

Newcastle are set to offer Alexander Isak a record-breaking deal in an effort to fight off interest in the striker. The Swedish forward has regularly shone at St James’ Park since his £63m move from Real Sociedad.

He bagged 27 goals last term as Newcastle sealed a return to the Champions League. But one negative of that form has been other clubs sitting up and taking notice.

Liverpool are among the clubs interested in his services, while Premier League rivals Arsenal, as well as Barcelona are also keeping tabs on him. But according to The Times, Newcastle are already setting their stall out over Isak’s future amid a concern that a bid for him could arrive next month.

It is suggested that Magpies chiefs are set to offer the Swede a new contract which would make him the club’s highest-paid player in their history. Isak currently banks around £150k-per-week on Tyneside with a contract that runs until 2028.

And it is hoped that a new deal would stave off the growing interest in his services, with Newcastle desperate to retain their star forward. Speaking last season, Isak revealed his happiness with life in the North East.

He said: “I don’t know much, to be honest. From within the club and from our side there are absolutely no discussions. It’s just full focus on playing for me. There’s not much to say, really. I’ve commented on my situation and my security in Newcastle several times.

“It’s been written how much I love the city and the club, how well I feel there. I’m not thinking about the future. I just want to perform for Newcastle. Now we won the cup, but we want to finish strong and reach the Champions League games. That’s where my focus lies.

“There is no reason for me to think about anything else (other than Newcastle). I feel incredibly comfortable at Newcastle. The only focus I have is on playing.”

Meanwhile, Eddie Howe also offered his take on Isak’s future, claiming he was in no mood to sell, albeit he could not guarantee that the forward would still be at the club next season. He said: “I never make those guarantees about any player and it’s not to do with Alex’s future but I’d be foolish to sit here and do anything like that.

“We want to keep our strongest players, I’ve said that ever since I’ve been here and sat in this seat. We have to try and keep our best players and bring in more good players to make us even stronger because the ambition of the club and everyone connected with the club is long-term success and that’s the only way to get that.”
