Italy shattered several rather unpleasant records with their first home defeat to Germany since 1986 and not losing two games in a row since Cesare Prandelli’s tenure.
The Azzurri had taken the lead at San Siro through Sandro Tonali, only to be overturned by a pair of headers from Tim Kleindienst and Leon Goretzka.
This in itself was also a record, because Italy had not lost a home match from a leading situation since their friendly capitulation to France in November 2012.
Italy rack up negative records
Germany had not managed to beat the Nazionale on Italian soil since another 2-1 result in a friendly back in February 1986.
That was so long ago that the team was still representing West Germany, before the fall of the Berlin Wall.
The Azzurri had also lost their last match of 2024, beaten 3-1 by France at San Siro in the Nations League group game.
That means it is the first time the Nazionale lost back-to-back fixtures since the disastrous 2014 World Cup campaign under coach Prandelli.
