Ivan Toney sparks brawl as he goads goalkeeper with mocking celebration in Saudi Arabia – after coolly winning game with 104TH-MINUTE penalty

Ivan Toney infuriated his opponents with a mocking celebration after coolly converting a last-gasp penalty during Al-Ahli’s 2-1 win over Al-Taawoun on Wednesday night.

The England international, 29, stepped up from the spot to score a 104th-minute winner for the Saudi Pro League side after the opposing goalkeeper attempted to put him off with a series of distracting gestures.

Toney, a spot-kick specialist renowned for never taking his eyes off the goalkeeper, was branded ‘the coolest man on the planet’ at the 2024 European Championship after scoring for England in their quarter-final penalty shootout win over Switzerland.

In an attempt to shake Toney off his rhythm, Al-Taawoun goalkeeper Mailson continually pointed to an area of the goal as if to show the former Brentford star exactly where he was planning to dive.

Despite Mailson’s antics and the weight of significant pressure on his shoulders, Toney carried out his usual run-up and waited for a split second to commit the goalkeeper before placing the ball exactly where he had been pointing.

Keen to mock the goalkeeper for his failed attempt to sabotage the penalty, Toney ran into the net and repeatedly pointed to the spot where he had scored, instantly infuriating Al-Taawoun’s players.

Footage from the stadium showed three furious opponents leaping toward Toney inside the Al-Taawoun net before being restrained by two Al-Ahli players, as the 29-year-old forward continued to gesture provocatively in their direction.

After a short melee inside the penalty area, Toney was chaperoned away by team-mates to celebrate the win, which climbed Al-Ahli level on points with Al-Taawoun in the Saudi Pro League table.

Former Brentford manager Thomas Frank hailed Toney as the best penalty taker in the world during the striker’s time in the Premier League.

The Dane, who now coaches Tottenham, said of Toney after he scored a hat-trick against Leeds in 2022: ‘I have said many times he is the best penalty taker in the world and hopefully I won’t get bored (of) saying it.

‘England have been in a few penalty shootouts and if they want to win one, they need to pick Ivan.’

Toney, who broke into the England set-up under former manager Gareth Southgate, has not played for the Three Lions since his cameo appearance against Senegal in June 2025.

Despite not being called up by Thomas Tuchel for his last three England squads, the Saudi Pro League striker will still have hopes of making the team for this summer’s World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
