Jair da Costa, a legend of Helenio Herrera’s Grande Inter squad and World Cup winner with Brazil, has died at the age of 84.

The winger was one of the key figures in the Nerazzurri side that won two editions of the European Cup at Inter in 1964 and 1965.

He was also present for four Serie A titles and two editions of the Intercontinental Cup, playing in the team that lost the only ever Serie A Scudetto play-off in 1964, losing 2-0 to Bologna.

At international level, Jair was in the Brazil squad that lifted the World Cup in 1962.

Jair a hero for Inter

His career was indelibly linked with Inter, amassing a total 263 competitive appearances for the club, where he scored 70 goals and provided four assists.

There was also a brief spell in Italy with Roma, where he found the net twice in 26 games.

Jair was in Italy from 1962 to 1972, when returning to Brazil for Santos, then concluding his playing career in Canada for Windsor City in 1976.
