Jamie Carragher cut a stone-faced figure in the stands at Anfield as he watched Liverpool get knocked out of the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain.

The Reds fell at the first hurdle in the knockout stages of the Champions League on Tuesday night as they fell to a 1-0 defeat on the night then lost on penalties against the Ligue 1 leaders.

After taking a 1-0 lead from Paris last week in a game the French side dominated, Arne Slot‘s side went behind early in the return leg as Ousmane Dembele pounced on somewhat of a defensive mix up early on.

The Reds did their best to bounce back, but failed to break down a resilient away defence and it was Gianluigi Donnarumma who was the hero for the away side in saving two penalty kicks.

It was a sold out crowd an Anfield for the match, and the Kop – Liverpool’s main stand – was packed, and included Carragher.

The former Reds defender-turned-pundit was seen stood in the home stands with the fans at Anfield, but cut a disappointed look as his former side were dumped out the competition.

Seen wearing an all-black jacket, a disappointed Carragher was caught watching on by television cameras, seemingly staring into the distance after a disappointing evening.

The 47-year-old is a regular on both Sky Sports and – more commonly on European nights – CBS Sports’ Champions League coverage, but got up close and personal to the action on Wednesday.

Footage was shared by CBS Sports on social media of Carragher sat in the Kop chatting to fans during the rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone.

He clapped the song after, but Michah Richards, who works with Carragher and was on CBS, said: ‘I’m not going to lie, I am disappointed. he is in the Kop, one of the best songs football has to offer, and it was bleak. He was livlier in the yellow wall. I don’t know if it’s nerves or a lack of alcohol.’

Carragher did work as a broadcaster for the game live from Anfield alongside the likes of Peter Schmeichel. CBS had a regular camera showing their pundit’s reaction during the game.

At full time, he said: ‘The best team won. I called the first leg a robbery and in the first leg you felt Liverpool would win comfortably but they couldnt’ get the goal.

‘It felt like nip and tuck but in extra time PSG took over. In the Kop we were desperate for penalties and anything can happen.’
