  • Jamie Redknapp has criticised Manchester United‘s ‘toxic’ squad following the sacking of Erik ten Hag as Red Devils boss.

Ten Hag was dismissed from his role after nearly two-and-a-half years in charge on Monday, with Ruud van Nistelrooy taking over on a temporary basis, including Wednesday’s League Cup tie against Leicester.

It is expected that Ruben Amorim will take charge, though when remains to be seen as negotiations over his notice period at current club Sporting Lisbon continue.

But Redknapp has suggested that the issues at the club are deeper than just the manager, with the players having to take a look at themselves, according to the pundit.

Speaking on Sky Sports, he suggested that there’s a lot that needs changing at the club and called for the next boss to be given time.’

You have to remember that everyone talks about Ten Hag and how disappointing it has been for him,’ he said. ‘You have to take this group of players in terms of context of other managers and getting them dismissed as well.

‘This group has been really poor. It has been quite toxic for a while in terms of not performing, not doing enough, getting managers sacked regularly and for my liking too easily.

‘It feels like, “It’s fine, the manager will go, someone else will come in”. That culture has to change. So whoever comes inn, first of all they have to make sure they give them time, he is not going to go in there and it will be an easy job.

‘He is going to need time to get the players he needs, play the way he wants to play and be given that luxury because if after six months people start complaining, it is not going to work. He needs time.’

Van Nistelrooy picked a strong side for his first game in charge, opting to use the same 4-2-3-1 that Ten Hag used during the game.

It featured Lisandro Martinez at left back while Manuel Ugarte and Casemiro played together in midfield, with captain Bruno Fernandes also playing.

Izzy Christiansen, also speaking on Sky, noted how the United players’ efforts would be of note during Wednesday’s game due to it being the first one without Ten Hag in the dugout.

‘It’s going to be fascinating to see how the players perform,’ she said. ‘Do they feel like a weight has been lifted? Like they are now under the spotlight even more?

‘It is quite a good fixture for the players and we will see how they perform.’
