Jamie Vardy makes Premier League future claim as legendary Leicester striker prepares for Foxes farewell

Jamie Vardy is convinced he still has a Premier League career ahead of him as he prepares to call time on his 13 years at Leicester.

Vardy will not feature in the Foxes’ final game of the campaign, at Bournemouth on May 25, meaning his 500th appearance – against Ipswich at the King Power Stadium on Sunday – will be his last in Leicester colours.

But despite interest from several Championship clubs, Vardy is focused on staying at the top level, with the Premier League his preference.

Asked whether he wanted to stay among the elite, the 38-year-old said: ‘Yeah, 100 per cent. But again, football’s a crazy world. So you never know what’s going to happen. I’m always excited for what comes next.

‘I’ve always said I’ll keep going until my legs literally tell me, no, you need to stop, we’re done. And my legs are fine,’ he told Sky Sports.

Vardy needs one more goal to make it 200 for Leicester, and it would make a fitting equation if he could reach the mark in his 500th game.

Although he has eight goals this term, Vardy has not been able to save Leicester from relegation. The Foxes will make an instant return to the Championship after a dismal campaign.

Their most important task now is to decide who will lead their challenge to win promotion. 

Ruud van Nistelrooy has presented his plans to the hierarchy, but has yet to learn whether he will have the chance to put them into practice.

After such an embarrassing season, there is expected to be a reworking of Leicester’s structure, which may see recruitment chief Martyn Glover taking a more central role.

Until now Jon Rudkin, a firm ally of chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha, has been an all-powerful director of football but has been targeted this season by angry supporters, who blame him for Leicester’s slump.
