The man who made over 314 appearances for FC Köln’s first team has spoken on Wirtz joining the Premier League champions.
The dust has finally settled on one of the lengthiest transfer sagas involving a Bundesliga club – Florian Wirtz is finally a Liverpool player.
It looked as if the 22-year-old star was set to join Bayern Munich until talks fell through and the Reds came swooping in.
However, former FC Köln and Germany international Jonas Hector is not best pleased about the move, as he told BILD:
“I would have liked it if he played for Bayern. Especially in perspective, for the national team and for next year [2026 World Cup].
“Because there – if you have a decent block [of national team players] you can get into the swing of things even better,” he explained.
Hector’s rationale makes sense – if the core of Germany’s national team players play for Bayern, their understanding should be better.
However, this is the world of modern football. Everything has it’s price and who could blame Leverkusen for accepting the €135million offer.
