Jose Mourinho has come under fierce criticism for his controversial comments about Vinicius Junior following allegations of racism during Real Madrid’s Champions League victory over Benfica.
The match was suspended for 10 minutes after Vinicius reported that Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni had made racist remarks towards him. The incident occurred after the Brazilian winger scored and celebrated near the corner flag.
Mourinho suggested Vinicius had “incited” the crowd with his dancing celebration, telling reporters: “When you score a goal like that you celebrate in a respectful way.” The Benfica boss claimed the Real Madrid star was not “just happy to score that astonishing goal.”
Former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney led the criticism, calling Mourinho’s comments “very unfair” on Amazon Prime. Ex-Real Madrid midfielder Clarence Seedorf was even more scathing, accusing Mourinho of trying to “justify racial abuse.”
“We should never, ever justify racial abuse,” Seedorf said. “Vinicius has had enough of that unjustified behaviour from people.”
Jamie Carragher branded Mourinho a hypocrite, pointing to his own history of provocative celebrations. The former Liverpool defender reminded viewers of Mourinho “running down the touchline at Old Trafford” and telling opposition fans to “shut up.”
Micah Richards expressed disappointment in the Portuguese manager, saying he expected better from such an influential figure in football.
