Real Madrid were dealt a hefty blow by Arsenal on Tuesday evening, but judging by footage which has emerged of Jude Bellingham, and reports from Spain, it may be a bigger blow to Carlo Ancelotti than it first seemed.

The Gunners pulled off something of a shock result at the Emirates to take a 3-0 lead in the tie ahead of the second leg, thanks to two fine free-kicks from Declan Rice and a Mikel Merino goal.

The Gunners were slight favourites heading into the game but few would have predicted such a commanding result, given Real’s heritage in the competition and the star quality they can boast.

Yet the hosts were largely in control for most of the match, and left with one foot in the semi-finals, and are already being tipped by Opta as the most likely side to win the entire competition next month.

Madrid, though, were left reeling in the wake of the result, with Bellingham openly admitting that his side were ‘lucky’ not to lose by more, and the midfielder was also filmed in a strange interaction with his boss during the game.

Ancelotti is seen talking to both Bellingham and Eduardo Camavinga on the touchline, and looks to be passing on a tactical tweak to his two midfielders.

Bellingham though appears to disagree and shakes his head at Ancelotti before returning to the action, seemingly not convinced.

While there are likely countless examples of players not agreeing with a manager’s input, Marca have claimed it sums up ‘the desperation’ of the players on the pitch.

They further insinuate that the manager was looking to instruct his players on how to regain control of the midfield and dampen the energy of Arsenal’s press with.

To then potentially disagree with a manager’s suggestions on how to wrest back control in a game that they ultimately went on to lose, would perhaps speak to a lack of support from the dressing room.

Spanish reports have also claimed that Ancelotti’s future at the club is now all but over, following the defeat.

Real Madrid chiefs are thought to regard Ancelotti as a club icon – and rightly so, with three Champions Leagues-LaLiga doubles at the Bernabeu – though his position has reportedly been under pressure earlier this season.

Real made a poor start to the season, with Kylian Mbappe notably struggling in his first months at the club, and they have suffered heavy defeats against their nearest rivals throughout the campaign.

After scraping through to the Last-16 via the play-offs, they required penalties to beat Atletico Madrid, and have now conceded 12 goals in their last five games, including eight in three home games.

One report from Spanish outlet Relevo claimed that the Italian legend was ‘mortally wounded’ on Tuesday night, with his side now at risk of missing out on both league and Champions League titles this term.

The report claims that he has struggled to find the right balance in his team this year after so much success last term, and that despite there still being a chance domestically, Ancelotti’s prolonged presence at the helm now seems unlikely.

It is thought that the potential availability of Xabi Alonso – still under contract at Bayer Leverkusen but long linked with a Bernabeu return – added further pressure to Ancelotti’s position.

There is still the chance of a comeback against Arsenal, and Real only trail Barcelona domestically by four points, though the Italian will likely need to draw on every ounce of his vast experience at the top of the game to turn things around next week.
