Jules Kounde is expected to line-up as right-back in Barcelona‘s top of the table La Liga clash against Atletico Madrid on Saturday night.

If Kounde starts as expected, it will be his 70th game of 2024 for club and country.

That in and of itself is impressive but Mundo Deportivo are reporting that, with 5,872 minutes played in 69 appearances for Barcelona and France so far this season, Jules Kounde has played more football than anyone else in the world.

Whatever amount he adds to that total against Diego Simeone’s men will only be padding out his margin of victory as the most played player in 2024.

Second to Kounde is Real Madrid’s Fede Valverde, who ascended to his total of 5,663 minutes played in 67 games during Los Blancos’ Intercontinental Cup win over Pachuca.

Valverde’s leapfrogged Colombian Jhon Arias who plays for Fluminense. He had a total of 5,599 minutes in 67 games according to CIES Observatory.

Neither man can match Kounde, however, whose ever presence for Barcelona and France has been truly impressive in a year that began in a rocky place under Xavi but ends with the Blaugrana looking renewed under Hansi Flick.

A New Position for Barcelona’s New Era

Barcelona have been brilliant under Hansi Flick, and sit top of La Liga and second in the Champions League. The German head coach has had an instant impact on the form of the Catalan club, and they look as good as they have in years.

Part of that is the relentless and consistent quality Jules Kounde provides at right-back. Signed as a centre-back, Kounde has been thriving on the right under the German coach, looking more potent in attack than he ever has, even registering three assists in one Champions League match.

It seems as though Kounde has finally accepted his new position of right-back, playing there for Barcelona and France with such relentlessness that he’s literally set a world record.
