Jurgen Klopp’s five greatest moments at Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp has departed from Liverpool, spelling an end to nine successful years.

Earlier this year, the German said that he needed a rest after almost a decade in the dugout of the Premier League giants.

Winning the Premier League title (2019-2020)

Klopp was the first Premier League manager of Liverpool to win the league title, doing so in the 2019-2020 season. The team’s dominance was evident as they finished with an impressive 99 points from 38 games – an astounding figure – leaving second-place Manchester City trailing by a substantial 18 points. This achievement marked the end of Liverpool’s 30-year league title drought and heightened their rivalry with the Citizens still further.

The 7-0 Victory Over Manchester United (2023)

In 2023, Klopp’s Liverpool delivered a torched earth performance over their arch-rivals – a 7-0 win over Manchester United. It was Man Utd’s heaviest defeat since 1931, while he came at a time when Liverpool were enduring something of a slump and Man Utd looked reinvigorated. Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah, and Darwin Nunez each scored a brace, while Roberto Firmino capped off the display with the seventh and final goal.

Champions League win (2018-19)

Perhaps the greatest-ever achievement from Klopp, winning the Champions League title in the 2018-19 season. He led them to a remarkable 4-0 victory over Barcelona in the semi-final’s second leg to reach the final, where they beat Tottenham.

It was the club’s first Champions League since 2006 and their second since 1984. It propelled Klopp and the Reds conversations about them being the greatest to ever play.

Comeback against Borussia Dortmund (2015-16)

In Klopp’s inaugural season at Liverpool he managed to complete a sensational comeback against a club he had only just left – Borussia Dortmund, In the Europa League semi-final and trailing by three goals with 30 minutes remaining, goals from Philippe Coutinho, James Milner, and a Dejan Lovren inspired one of the best recoveries in the modern game. There was a degree of fight and urgency showing that Liverpool had been missing for a long time.

Celebrating a WBA draw (2015)

At the risk of just listing off all of Klopp’s trophy wins, we thought we’d include this moment. It didn’t seem like a big deal at the time, even mocked by some quarters, but in retrospect, it was something of a landmark occasion.

Klopp had his side celebrate on the Anfield pitch after a 2-2 draw with West Bromwich Albion.

After securing a point at home, the German made his squad go over to the Anfield faithful and celebrate in unison. It was a stroke of genius as it signified the beginning of the connection between the stadium, fans, and Klopp .”It was the best atmosphere since I came here,” Klopp said after the game. “Of course people are disappointed but they didn’t let us feel that.
