Paul Pogba’s turbulent time at Juventus is nearing an end, with the Serie A giants reportedly set to release the World Cup-winning midfielder.
The announcement is expected during the current international break, signalling a definitive end to the Frenchman’s stint in Turin.
Contract termination after drug test failure
Despite being contracted until 2026, Paul’s future at Juventus has been derailed following his positive test for testosterone metabolites following a Serie A match with Torino last season.
He initially faced a four-year ban that would have effectively ended his career, yet on appeal, this was reduced to 18 months. Nevertheless, Juventus view his position at the club as untenable.
His release is expected to be announced before the end of the current international break.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Pogba’s release will save the club approximately €30 million in wages. This includes the termination of his lucrative €8 million-per-year deal, which could have risen by €2 million with bonuses. For now, Pogba earns only €2,000 per month during his ban.

Pogba’s future plans
Pogba, who will be eligible to return to competitive football as of March, had previously indicated a willingness to continue playing for the Old Lady.
Speaking in October, he said: “I’m ready to give up some money to play for Juventus again.”
We’ve made important investments in midfield, there’s no room in the squad
– Juventus technical director Cristiano Giuntoli
But his club have other plans, having seemingly budgeted for the player never to return.
“We’ve made important investments in midfield, there’s no room in the squad,” technical director Cristiano Giuntoli explained.
The 31-year-old will be able to continue his career as a free agent, with rumours suggesting that he could even make a return to the Premier League in spite of the case that has dogged him for more than a year.
A costly mistake for Juventus
Pogba’s return to Juventus from Manchester United in 2022 had been hailed as a potentially game-changing move for the Serie A club. However, it has proven a costly error, with the Frenchman dogged by a loss of form, injuries and the doping scandal.
His second spell in Italy will, therefore, end in disgrace, though at least for Juventus, they have avoided a huge financial hit.
Key points
- Juventus decision: Pogba to be released before the international break ends.
- Financial impact: Juventus to save €30m on contract obligations by ending his contract early.
