Juventus have been ordered to pay Cristiano Ronaldo almost €10 million in outstanding wages, according to Italian media.

The Portuguese megastar had initiated legal proceedings against his former club over €19.5m in unpaid wages. The charge was that Juventus had exploited a COVID-19 agreement during Ronaldo’s time at the club to put off the paying of parts of his wages.

The Bianconeri failed to inform the Italian FA, the FIGC, of doing so in their financial statements. However, because Juventus had deferred the wages with the full knowledge and consent of Ronaldo, it has been ruled that the 39-year-old shares responsibility.

The Old Lady, therefore, now ‘only’ have to pay their former superstar €9.7m plus interest, which is still a hefty fee, especially given Juventus’ recent history of financial struggles. Ronaldo last suited up for Juventus in 2021.

Ronaldo joined Juventus from Real Madrid in 2018 in a now-infamous €117m transfer to help the Italian giants win their first Champions League trophy since 1996. Things did not go to plan, however, and after some historic failures in Europe’s premier competition, Ronaldo left the club in 2021 to rejoin Man Utd for €17m.

Economically, the signing of Ronaldo was suicidal for the Bianconeri given the financial outlay on the Portuguese and they are still in the process of recovering. Juventus haven’t won the Scudetto since 2020 and will need to shed talent this summer in order to be able to strengthen their team.

During his time in Italy, Ronaldo notched an impressive 101 goals and 22 assists in 134 games. The legendary forward has been playing for Saudi giants Al-Nassr since early 2023 after his second stint at Man Utd ended acrimoniously in the wake of an explosive interview with Piers Morgan.
