Kasper Schmeichel emerges as possible target for Nottingham Forest – DESPITE the club being charged with breaking Premier League spending rules – as initial talks take place over 37-year-old Anderlecht goalkeeper

Kasper Schmeichel has emerged as a potential option for Nottingham Forest if they are able to sign a goalkeeper in January.

The 37-year-old spent 11 years at Forest’s East Midlands rivals Leicester, winning the Premier League and the FA Cup during that time, and is currently with Belgian giants Anderlecht.

It is thought Schmeichel would be open to returning to England ahead of Euro 2024 this summer, where he expects to play for Denmark. Mail Sport also understands there is a relatively low buy-out clause in his contract and that initial discussions between representatives have taken place. Peter Gulacsi of RB Leipzig is another on Forest’s radar.

Forest’s plan earlier in this window was to proceed to the end of the season with keepers Matt Turner and Odysseas Vlachodimos. But Turner produced another shaky display in the 3-2 defeat at Brentford last weekend, though the former Arsenal man did at least register a clean sheet as Forest drew 0-0 at Bristol City in the FA Cup on January 26.

However, there are a number of hurdles to be cleared. Forest were charged with breaking Premier League spending rules earlier this month and are waiting to learn their punishment, which could be a points deduction.

Since they were promoted in 2022, Forest have signed 43 players in three transfer windows and recognise the need to move players on before they can bring others in.

So far their only activity in this transfer window has been to cancel Andrey Santos’ season-long loan deal from Chelsea and agree a £2.6million price with Flamengo to sell Brazilian midfielder Gustavo Scarpa. Emmanuel Dennis, who was on loan at Istanbul Basaksehir, has now rejoined Watford from Forest on a similar arrangement. Divock Origi is another who could depart following an unsuccessful loan stint from AC Milan.
