KEOWN TALKS TACTICS: Enzo Maresca’s fine-tuning has Chelsea look like they are meaning business… it is time we started taking the Blues more seriously

It is time we started taking Chelsea more seriously. They are looking back in the mood for a top-four finish.

Like everyone, I had my reservations before a ball was kicked under Enzo Maresca, a coach who had never managed at a level this unforgiving, suddenly tasked with leading the Premier League’s youngest squad.

But he has been fine-tuning his system week by week, boosted by players now being used in their right positions.

Cole Palmer started the season as a right winger, but now he’s a No 10, where he can be a creative game controller.

Moises Caicedo was dropping deep between the two centre backs, but now he is staying higher in midfield alongside Enzo Fernandez, and as well as playing the pass for Nicolas Jackson to score at West Ham, he has made more tackles than any player in the league.

Fernandez was briefly trialled as a No 10, but now he’s partnering Caicedo, as he should. Marc Cucurella plays a vital role, acting as the inverted left back, moving into midfield as an extra option. At Bournemouth, he was so advanced that his average position was higher than the midfielders.

Out wide, Jadon Sancho has provided two assists from the left, while Pedro Neto is pushing Noni Madueke to start on the right after looking impactful as a substitute.

Chances are being created for Jackson, who has shown a new-found composure in front of goal, scoring the one-on-one opportunities he was previously missing.

On Saturday, they host Brighton, who average 62 per cent possession this season. Chelsea average 57 per cent.

They both want to keep the ball and when they don’t have it, they will press until it’s back with them. But Brighton need to beware their high defensive line as Jackson will relish the chance to run into space. I’m sure boss Fabian Hurzeler and his analysts will have noted that risk.

Hurzeler is unbeaten since taking over. The Seagulls spent £194milllion in the summer and whenever they sign someone relatively unknown, you assume they know something we don’t.

Their track record of unearthing uncut diamonds is unparalleled, but I’ve been impressed by 19-year-old academy product Jack Hinshelwood. He started at left back but has moved into midfield, where he’s been taking up clever positions to receive passes, scoring a superb goal against Nottingham Forest.

Chelsea have won their last three away league games, but are yet to emerge victorious at home, where supporters have shown their impatience.

The best way to get Stamford Bridge onside is by winning and a fascinating tactical tussle awaits on Saturday. Beat Brighton and the conversation about Chelsea and Champions League qualification will no longer fly under the radar.
