Germany’s current captain Joshua Kimmich provided another solid performance from right-back in a narrow win over Northern Ireland. The Bayern Munich midfielder now enters the top-ten list of appearances for Die nationalmannschaft, tying with Jürgen Kohler on 105.

“We hoped we’d have more control, but it was a wild game. It was a real fight,” said Kimmich after the game. “The most important thing was the three points. We changed our situation completely, and we have everything in our hands.”

Kimmich also stressed the fact that Germany didn’t concede a goal in the October international break. “If you had told me before the games that we’d win both without conceding, I’d have taken it.”

Kimmich (105) will not have a chance to level ninth-placed Jürgen Klinsmann (108) next month when Germany face Luxembourg and Slovakia in the final two games of the qualifying group. However, the 30-year-old will most likely surpass Lothar Matthäus’ record of 150 caps at the end of his career.
